Paris is known for its many wonderful restaurants; after all the French are the connoisseurs of the good life. It has been said “you can’t get a bad meal in Paris”. Well, we have had several bad meals (especially in some of the tourist trap restaurants of the Latin Quarter). We would like to amend the statement to read “You do not have to pay a fortune to get a really fine meal in Paris” Some of the listed Paris restaurants are expensive, but they are worth the money. Oh and don’t forget to read up on the top French Dishes you have to try while you are in Paris.
The less expensive places are also good restaurants that might lack nothing more than a world-famous chef or a fabulous location. I am not listing the obvious Michelin-starred restaurants, you know that they will be fabulous. I am listing Paris restaurants that average travelers can afford on a trip to Paris; places where we or our colleagues have eaten and enjoyed the meal.
Be sure to look at the menus (Cartes) posted near the door of every restaurant; they will give you an idea of the prices and the type of dishes served. Those on a budget should consider the Menu du Jour or Formulae. Menus are fixed price meals usually consisting of a starter, main dish and dessert. Many restaurants give choices and different price levels for different menus. They are usually less expensive than purchasing the items a la Carte.
Since 2008, all Paris restaurants and cafes are required by law to be non-smoking. Of course, that means that the outside tables are crowded with smokers. C’est la vie!

Paris Restaurants in the 1st Arrondissement
The first Arrondissement is in the very heart of the city. It is walking distance to most tourist sites and therefore is more expensive. Some fabulous restaurants are located here; but we have found a few less expensive gems as well.

This bistro in the heart of Paris, now part of the Michel Rostang group, has become something of a haute bistro. It is still casual and comfortable but has been taken up a notch or two. Enjoy the terrace in warm weather at this beautiful Paris restaurant.

The fifth Arrondissement is located on the left bank (rive gauche) with views of Notre Dame and proximity to the glorious Luxembourg Gardens. The fifth Arrondissement is also known as the Latin Quarter because the Sorbonne where students studied Latin at one time is in this area. The concierge of our hotel recommended this little restaurant and we were not disappointed. The Petit Prince de Paris offers 4 options menu: the Duck plate for 29 €, along with an 18€ Formula, Formula 23€ and a Formula for 26 €. I chose a duck dish and it was excellent. My daughter chose chicken. We mixed it up and I had the starter and she ordered the dessert, so we could share. The menu changes every season to guarantee new flavors. The decor is old French style and is dark and romantic. Next time I will come back with my husband!

We ate at this bistro located on the busy Blvd de Montparnasse on a Sunday evening. More interesting looking restaurants were closed, so we thought we’d take our chance on this inviting place. We weren’t disappointed. They have a great special menu that includes a bottle of wine for a very good price. The bistro specializes in dishes from the Southwest region of France. Think duck… think confit…think foie gras. We sat next to two Frenchmen, one of whom was from the southwest and was enjoying food from his childhood. It was a wonderful way to spend our final night in Paris…enjoying good food and good company.

10th Arrondissement
The 10th arrondissement centers around the Canal St. Martin and the restaurants and cafés which line its banks. The streets along the canal become car-free zones on Saturday afternoons/evenings, and all day on Sundays to make way for the Parisien cycling and roller-blading hoards. Two great train stations Gare du Nord and Gare de l’Est are located here as is the historic Place de la République in the far south of the arrondissement.

14th Arrondissement
Although largely residential, the 14th arrondissement is best known for Montparnasse (both the station and the towering skyscraper Tour Montparnasse), for the Paris Catacombs and the Parc Montsouris. The Cité Universitaire is also found in this district traditionally known for lively cafés and restaurants around the Boulevard du Montparnasse and the rue Daguerre.

We happened across this little restaurant while staying in the Montparnasse area of Paris. What a find! We had a delicious dinner made with fresh ingredients and a lot of flair. We got there at opening and watched as many Parisians began to flow in. It is a popular spot and it is no wonder. The atmosphere is modern and the hospitality is gracious. We will return.

Great fish at reasonable prices brings patrons back again and again. Run by the Bras family who own the Famous Dome Restaurant and the Poissonerie du Dome across the street, this little bistro also offers great wine buys. If you want oysters, you’ll need to go to Le Dome.

We visited this fine restaurant on a rainy evening. The atmosphere and the warm welcome made us forget the weather. The restaurant offers a few prix fixe dinners and we each opted to try a different one. For the entree, I chose foie gras; I can’t help myself, I love it! For the main course, I had the duck breast glazed with honey and French Champagne, braised pumpkin and vanilla. It was delicious. My husband had the Terrine campaign Morels and spicy sauce for an entree; it was unforgettable. His main course was Fillet of beef with fondant potatoes and sauce béarnaise. The restaurant also offers a fine wine list. We’ll be back next time we’re in Paris.

Paris 18th Arrondissement Restaurants
The eighteenth arrondissement, best known for Montmartre which was the center of the flourishing artist community from around 1907 to 1914. Picasso, Dali, Duchamp, Toulouse-Latrec, and others lived and worked here. The 18th is also the home of a thriving ethnic community in the east and a seedy red-light district along Boulevard de Clichy near Place Pigalle. Finding a good restaurant in Montmartre is not easy; here is our favorite.

Thank you Terri for the quick reply. I think more than the pricing, it was the formality of Chez Anges that surprised us. As mentioned, every other patron was in a suit and quite obviously on business. It was not a place for a casual lunch, either for Parisians or for visitors. Thanks again!

Completely misled by the review and pricing on Chez les Anges. Much of the menu was $$$$, some of it was $$$, and some $$. The atmosphere was EXTREMELY formal (white tablecloths, doorman, every other lunchtime patron -- every single one! -- was a male in a business suit). This is clearly not a "brasserie" or a place for a casual inexpensive lunch.

Hello Richard,
I am sorry that you feel mislead. Our reviewer found it in the $$-$$$ range. And, on reviewing the on-line menu, that appears correct. Things are more expensive in Paris, but a 38€ prix fixe dinner is a good value. I did change the review to calling it a restaurant rather than a brasserie and appreciate your pointing that out.
