Where to Stay in Aix en Provence, France

 

An ideal base for exploring Provence, Aix en Provence supplies a good selection of 3-star and 4-star accommodations, and, though it is short on 5-star and budget hotels, our list of ‘where to stay’ options includes an assortment of both. Because Provence is best explored by car, the following ‘where to stay’ options are not all within walking distance of the town center. Instead, some are located in the ruin-studded and lavender-scented countryside.

5-Star Hotels in Aix en Provence

Le Pigonnet
Located about a 15-minute walk from the city center, this hotel is the only 5-star hotel in Aix en Provence, and the expansive grounds offer picturesque French gardens with stone benches and flowers. The hotel, which is classically decorated throughout, has 47 individually decorated rooms (some of which could use renovating) and one junior suite. Each accommodation comes with air conditioning and sound proofing. Hotel amenities include an outdoor pool, fitness facility, spa, and hamman.

The Le Riviera restaurant serves gourmet French cuisine with a touch of inspiration from the Mediterranean, and, during the warmer months, meals can be had beneath hundred-year-old chestnut trees on the hotel terrace. Note that the restaurant closes January through February. The hotel also has an English-pub-style bar and lounge, where live jazz bands sometimes play.

La Maison D’aix
This hotel is not a 5-star accommodation, but it may interest travelers looking for luxury hotels in Aix en Provence. While it lacks a gym, it offers 4 rooms inside of a beautiful building renovated by architects Laura Juhen and Louis Mariotti. It aims to provide a home away from home—one steeped in the traditions of Provence.

From fresh-squeezed orange juice to the hospitality of the owners, this hotel gives attention to every detail. Each room features unique furnishings, and all come with Jerusalem marble bathrooms and complimentary WiFi. The room price includes a large-for-France-sized breakfast. Hotel amenities include The Secret Spa, which includes a Jacuzzi, indoor pool, spa, and hamman, and The Salon Rouge, which is a place to relax, with comfortable couches, a television, and library. Decorated in brilliant colors and located right in the city center, this stylish hotel features original artworks and a staff that goes out of its way to make your stay in Aix En Provence enjoyable. The lobby includes a fireplace, and a self-serve “honor” bar is available 24 hours a day.

There are 55 rooms, and the room price includes complimentary soft drinks, tea, and coffee as well as free parking; make sure to reserve a space before arrival. Breakfast is offered for an additional charge, and it includes a vast buffet as well as several items cooked to order. Note that guests who do not enjoy the colors pink and purple may wish to stay elsewhere.

3-Star Hotels in Aix en Provence

Aquabella Hotel
Just blocks from dozens of restaurants, café, and shopping options, this is one of the best 3-star hotels in the city. The rooms are pleasantly decorated—if somewhat basic—and each features air conditioning, complimentary ADSL or WiFi, and bathrobes.

The hotel’s amenities include a sauna, hamman, cardio room with several machines, and a beautiful outdoor swimming pool, which is encased by ancient fortifications and warmed May to September. Further, there’s a spa that offers a number of services, including mud wrap and salt scrub treatments. The Orange Grove restaurant serves lunch and dinner and focuses on seasonal and local cuisine, and L’instant bar provides a modern setting to enjoy cocktails, often with live jazz. During the warmer months, meals can be taken outdoors on the patio. For those looking to save, skip the pricy breakfast and head to a nearby café.

Best Western Hotel De L’arbois
Located about 7 miles outside of Aix en Provence in the La Duranne business park, this hotel is ideal for travelers looking to explore Provence by car and then return to the clean and modern standards of the Best Western hotel brand. Its 56 rooms are air conditioned and feature complimentary WiFi.

Amenities include a spa, sauna, fitness center, a small outdoor pool, a lounge bar, and Le Petit Arbols restaurant, which serves French dishes for lunch and dinner daily. In the warmer months, guests can enjoy the lounge and terrace. In addition, the rooftop features a Jacuzzi. Note that there is a bus stop nearby with a bus that runs directly to Aix en Provence.

Hotel des Augustins
Located inside of the convent of the Grands Augustins, this hotel will make you feel as though you’ve traveled back in time with complimentary WiFi in tow. Steeped in history, the building housed Martin Luther after he was excommunicated.

The lobby has retained its historical attributes, but the rooms, while comfortable, are quite typical. There are 29 individually decorated rooms, and, in addition to free WiFi, they feature air conditioning, minibars, satellite TVs, and sound proofing. Two of the rooms have private terraces. The hotel is located in the heart of Aix en Provence. Note that budget-conscious travelers may wish to skip breakfast and head to a nearby café.

Budget Accommodations in Aix en Provence

Hotel Du Globe
Just steps from the old city center, this hotel offers basic but clean rooms with air conditioning and free WiFi. The staff is especially welcoming. Amenities include a rooftop terrace with comfortable seating and views of the city and a parking garage (must reserve).

A large breakfast is served daily for an additional cost. Considering the location, this hotel is a great value, but note that some of the rooms are a bit small.

Le Mozart Hotel
This hotel offers a great location for a great value, and it takes roughly 10-15 minutes to walk to the old city. In addition, the countryside of Provence feels as though it is just outside the door.

The staff puts itself at your disposal, and the hotel has a patio and offers underground parking. Each of the 48 rooms comes with air conditioning, a terrace, and complimentary WiFi. Most of the rooms, while comfortable and clean, are basic and small, and guests looking for more space should reserve a room with both a bathtub and shower. One drawback is that the hotel does not have a restaurant and is not close to many restaurants, so guests must walk to the old city for dinner. Breakfast is served daily for a charge.
