A Jewel on Lake Lucerne: the Park Hotel Weggis

There are many beautiful resorts on the shores of Switzerland’s Lake Lucerne, but the Park Hotel Weggis stands out as a jewel among all other hotels. Not only does this hotel possess a peaceful ambiance, but the service, food and spa are virtually unmatched.

About Weggis

The lakeside resort of Weggis is located on the sunny side of Mount Rigi. This area, known as the Vierwaldstattersee, enjoys a particularly mild climate and is often referred to as the “Riviera of Central Switzerland”. Mark Twain was a guest here in 1897 and said, “This is the charmingest place we have ever lived in for repose and restfulness, superb scenery whose beauty undergoes a perpetual change from one miracle to another, yet never runs short of fresh surprises and new inventions. We shall always come here for the summers if we can.” Twain summered here for several years and now three of the suites in the Park Hotel Weggis are named after Mark Twain.

There are plenty of sights to see in the area and you will certainly be delighted with the well-tended garden promenades that stretch for several miles along the lake shore. You may also want to take the aerial cable-way up to Rigi-Kaltbad (1,427m/4,681 ft.) to a mountain health resort behind Weggis. This is great walking country, not only on the promenade but also on the slopes of the Rigi, which are planted with vines and some tropical species of vegetation. In addition, mountain transport links Weggis with the Rigi Railways and the hotel offers delightful boat rides on the lake.

The Park Hotel Weggis

The hotel was opened in 1875 as Hotel Bellevue and is located just 15 minutes from downtown Weggis. The main building and Schlössli wing are new art nouveau constructions. The first renovation and extensions were completed in April 2001. The Park Hotel Weggis has 52 exclusive rooms and 3 restaurants. The rooms are all quite large with modern, elegant décor. The amenities are sophisticated with the latest technology and there are even heated floors in the bathrooms. Most of the rooms have balconies and the views of the lake are stunning. The hotel is calm and quiet even at full capacity.

The Gourmet Restaurant Annex has been awarded 16 Gault Millau points and 1 Michelin star. Packages that include dinner in this fine restaurant may be the best way to experience the excellent food without breaking the bank. On a sunny day you can enjoy breakfast sitting on the terrace or in the garden.

The Spa at Park Hotel Weggis

The Spa has a Japanese meditation garden with old Bonsai trees and many of the spa rooms are stone cottages. The infinity pool is a tranquil and invigorating place to spend an afternoon in the sunshine. And, be sure to try the thermal pool then enjoy the relaxation room with a hot tea  while wearing your plush robe provided by the hotel. Very Zen!

The spa is staffed by a team of specially trained therapists from Tibet and India as well as Switzerland. One of the best spa treatments we enjoyed during our stay was the Caribbean scented poultice in our Thermo spa day bed. You can pretend to travel to a tropical, faraway place while experiencing a marvelous massage using summery and warming oil… you’ll feel like you are in paradise!

The list of awards the Park Hotel Weggis has garnered through the years includes its selection as one of the 10 best vacation hotels in Switzerland for the past eight years. This is a place to rest and relax, to have some fun, to dine, or just get away from it all for awhile.
