Cala Figuera, a tranquil and picturesque fishing village situated in a bay surrounded by cliffs, is one of the most scenic spots on the island of Mallorca and a world away from the tourist crowds. The setting is postcard picturesque with houses hanging off the cliffs above whitewashed boat houses with green colored doors. In the harbor below, sail boats peacefully rest on crystal clear turquoise waters while local fishermen mend nets on the pier – you get the feeling that time has stood still.
Many of the nearly 600 permanent inhabitants of this enchanting fishing port are working fishermen, making a living by delivering the daily catch to the fish market 60 km away in Palma. Cala Figuera is not an upbeat, trendy place offering lots of activities and its night life is not really worth mentioning. The village is small and authentic; the atmosphere unpretentious and wonderfully relaxing. The concept of stress surely didn’t come from Cala Figuera. Like a Mallorquin friend once stated: “Here we enjoy life, every bit of it.” Come here to unwind – and to be inspired.
What to See & Do
Cala Figuera has its breathtaking views, but it doesn’t have a beach, which probably has saved the village from mass tourism. The closest beach front is Cala Santanyi, approximately four km away. This beach is best accessed by way of the miniature train, “Cala Figuera Express”, which runs continuously during the summer season.
The disco, MondBar, serves great cocktails and you can dance to the latest pop hits on the open-air dance floor. Its is a good option for a night out during the summer season.
Not only hotel guests staying at Hotel Villa Sirena may use their spacious terrace, it is open for everyone and it is the perfect spot on a sunny afternoon to drink sangria and enjoy the magnificent view of the sea and the Cala Figuera light house.
Where to Eat
Pura Vida serves delicious Spanish dishes and its seafront terrace offers fantastic views. Pura Vida is located outside Cala Figuera, on the way to the neighboring village, Santanyi. You’ll need to take a taxi to get there and
it is necessary to reserve a table.
Mistral Restaurante is a restaurant with a friendly and personal atmosphere, serving Mediterranean and Mallorquin cuisine made from fresh, local products. After sunset, it is very romantic to dine in candle light on the terrace which overlooks the beautiful port below.
Where to Stay
Hotel Villa Sirena offers inexpensive, quality rooms and apartments. Most of them have balconies with amazing views of the rocky entrance to the port of Cala Figuera. All rooms have a/c and there is a small pool for hotel guests.
Hotel Rocamar is situated on top of the cliff opposite the light house. The hotel has a seafront terrace, swimming pool and bar, and it is possible to book a massage, scuba diving or bike rental at the reception.
Apartamentos Casa Maria houses six apartments in a Mallorquin style house with a small garden, situated 80 meters from the sea. The prices are very reasonable.
Hostal Ca’n Jordi. The rooms are small and basic, but if you’re lucky you’ll find yourself in one with a small balcony and a wonderful sea view. Quite a treat for a hostel stay and the prices are great, too! There is a bistro on the ground floor, and a large outside terrace.
